What is Facial Wasting
Treatments for Facial Wasting
Facial wasting or facial lipoatrophy is the loss of subcutaneous fat from the face and is associated with medication for treatment of HIV infection. The risk of facial wasting has been lessened because of advances in antiretroviral therapy, but it still occurs. The longer a person is on HIV medications, the greater the likelihood of developing problems with facial wasting. Signs of lipoatrophy include the loss of subcutaneous fat primarily in the temporal region and cheeks and this tends to produce an emaciated appearance.
There are two FDA approved facial fillers that can be used to treat facial lipoatrophy – Radiesse and Sculptra. Our team offers treatment of facial lipoatrophy with facial fillers in order to improve facial appearance. For individuals with limited financial means there are patient access programs that provide discounted facial fillers. We also assist our patients by helping them apply for the patient access programs for these treatments.
